Do I need a protein shake after my workout?

Yes, protein shakes are essential after workouts because it helps to repair and rebuild muscles torn during your exercise. Protein shakes have also helped alleviate my muscle pains post exercise.

Protein shakes are very convenient for me to increase my protein intake when I do not get enough from foods.

Protein powders come in many forms and its best to pick one that best fits your dietary needs or desires. Listed below are several types to select from and be sure to read the canister on for how many scoops to use and get the best results.

Common Protein Powder Sources:

  • Whey Protein: The source of whey protein is milk and is quickly absorbed by the body, making it useful before or after your workout. Whey also contains bio-active proteins that may offer other health benefits. Health benefits from bio-active proteins can be for some users lowering of blood pressure by inhibiting the angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACE), reduce stress levels by neutralizing or scavenging free radicals. In an upcoming blog I will dig deeper into all of the Whey Protein health benefits. If you cannot wait definitely worth a google search and read from a reliable source.

  • Casein Protein: This is another milk protein that digests much slower than whey, making this a great protein source prior to bed because it tends to make you sleepy and can your body can absorb the protein while you sleep peacefully.

  • Egg Protein: Well obvi the source is chicken…lol eggs. This protein source digestion rate is a medium and are often very costly at the store.

  • Soy Protein: This protein source is plant based and contains essential amino acids, which make it a complete protein source for vegans and vegetarians. I will definitely cover essential amino acids later this week and why and how they help to benefit all of our health.

  • Rice and Pea Protein: Is source is …drum role please …rice and peas. The two when combined will provide you with all the essential amino acids, This is a low allergenic source of protein, making this a possible source of protein for individuals with egg, dairy or soy allergies.

Happy Shaking!!!
